1 · Fire safety

Fire (Scotland) Act 2005 · Fire Safety (Scotland) Regulations 2006

Fire risk assessment — suitable & sufficient, kept current. ⏱ review annually & after any change
Fire detection & alarms — in place and maintained. ⏱ user test weekly · service 6-monthly
Emergency lighting — working on escape routes. ⏱ monthly flick test · annual full test
Fire extinguishers — right types, accessible. ⏱ service annually · extended 5-yearly
Escape routes & signage — clear and well signed. ⏱ check ongoing
Staff fire awareness — everyone knows what to do. ⏱ refresh ~annually

2 · First aid

Health and Safety (First-Aid) Regulations 1981

First-aid needs assessment — for your risk level & headcount. ⏱ review after any change
Enough trained first-aiders — for the size & layout of the workplace. ⏱ requalify every 3 years
Stocked, in-date first-aid kit(s) — with someone responsible. ⏱ check monthly
Accident recording — accident book kept; RIDDOR understood. ⏱ RIDDOR: report within legal timescales

3 · Policies & documents

Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

Written H&S policy — legally required at 5+ employees. ⏱ review annually
Risk assessments — for your significant hazards. ⏱ review annually & on change
COSHH assessments — where hazardous substances are used. ⏱ review on change of substance/process
Legionella risk assessment — for your water systems (commonly missed). ⏱ review ~every 2 years
Employers' liability insurance — in place and certificate available. ⏱ renew annually

4 · Training & competence

Inductions — H&S induction for role & site. ⏱ on joining
Role-specific training — manual handling, IOSH/SSSTS, asbestos awareness, work at height. ⏱ refresh every 1–3 years
Training records — kept, with refresher dates tracked. ⏱ keep current

5 · Ongoing management

Named responsible person — someone owns H&S day to day. ⏱ ongoing
Review dates diarised — so nothing lapses. ⏱ set reminders
Contractors managed — CDM duties met for construction work. ⏱ per project
